How to flip a switch so you crave exercise (based on science!)

I am on a constant search for the truth. Not in a distant mountaintop, guru worshipping, Eat, Pray Love kind of way, just a quest for what lies beneath the things we hear about and accept as real. 

I’m convinced most of what I read online is 99% BS. And I think that’s conservative.

Although this pertains to all information in general, it’s particularly rampant within the fitness realm.

Click bait runs amuck with headlines such as:

  • 5 reasons your cat is actually your soulmate!
  • This brick wall optical illusion is making the internet go INSANE!
  • Scientific proof Bigfoot looks through windows because he wants to borrow your outfits!

Only ONE of these headings is not real. Can you guess it? (Answer at the end.) I think you know… but seriously, who stares at a brick wall?

The key to get someone to click on your story is to make the headline so freakin’ irresistible you can’t help yourself but navigate your mouse towards it as if your hand has suddenly been taken over by some bizarre force.

Before you know it you’re down a rabbit hole of celebrity gossip, YouTube cat videos, and Nordstrom shoe sales.

It happens to the best of us, trust me. YOU are not alone. Group hug!!

Okay, back to business.

So fitness.

Why is it so hard to get started and stick with a program long enough to see results? 

Here’s the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth:

Because getting in shape and losing weight is seen as the opposite of fun and good times.

Wait what?? Who knew?

Not what you think when someone says “broccoli”

Case in point: Have you ever heard someone talk about biceps curls or broccoli in the same sentence as the words “fun” or “best weekend of my life”?

Likely not.

This is not to say the two could never be part of a fun and exciting time, but chances are they’re not the focal points.

Unless this happens… “I was at the gym doing biceps curls when suddenly a pinata dropped down out of nowhere, a party broke out, and Margaritas were on the house!”

Or, “I didn’t realize Jan was still mad at me for beating her at online poker until she threw the broccoli casserole at my head. Thankfully, she missed and it landed in the petunia garden.”

So yes, sometimes these words can be included in some wild and crazy situations. But not often.

More typically you’ll hear, “My grandson hates broccoli so much he hides it under his shirt,” or “I dread my workouts overall, but especially those stupid biceps curls. It’s not as if I’m entering a bodybuilding competition so what’s even the point?”

Therein lies the problem.

Never fear. New research shows a way to fix this unfortunate scenario.

Yup, according to a new study, simply changing your perspective on how you look at exercise can motivate you to stick with it.

Sounds logical, but how the heck do you do that? Stay with me here.

The study involved 40 women – a mix of exercisers and non-exercisers – and asked them about what really makes them feel happy and successful.

See if you can guess the top responses:

  1. To have meaningful connections with others
  2. To feel relaxed and free of pressure during leisure time
  3. To accomplish goals they set for themselves
  4. To have a never-ending supply of their favorite lipstick shade that miraculously never gets discontinued

Okay, so maybe I added one of my own in this list. But 1 through 3 were the for-real answers.

The women who did not exercise viewed exercise as counterproductive to the things that made them happy.

In other words, they felt exercise was worthless unless it involved buckets of sweat, achy muscles and anything else that was the exact opposite of connecting to others, feeling relaxed and accomplished.

On the other hand, the women who were regular exercisers did not see this separation. They felt as if exercise went hand-in-hand with feeling connected and all the rest of it.

It may sound like a no-brainer, but this mental shift can mean the difference between seeing exercise as torture or as *gasp* enjoyment.

I’ve often talked about how my social life revolves around the gym. I also enjoy listening to my music and catching up on current events while I’m doing cardio.

Okay, the the latter has been less than joyous lately, but you get the idea.

To flip your own switch, link activity to something you enjoy:

  •  Watching TV… while doing cardio
  •  Listening to music… throughout your workout (I use a Bluetooth and love it)
  •  Meeting friends… to keep you motivated
  • Planning a fun outing after your workout… the operative word being “after”
  • Joining a meetup with others who have similar active interests
